Day Thirty Three: Better than the pictures...

When we woke up this morning the sky was cloudy and it was sprinkling a little. We were a little bummed because we had plans to go to the town of Oia today and had reservations at one of the best restaurants to watch the famous Santorini sunsets. We prayed that it would clear by sunset and by the time we got to Oia the sky was blue and beautiful.

We rode the bus from Fira to Oia (pronounced EE-a), about a 30 min ride. Oia is known for the best sunset views on the island and when you see pictures of Greece, espcially Santorini, they are usually pictures of Oia, with its white washed buildings with bright blue rooftops. Oia was also the location that scene in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was filmed.

We spent the day walking around, shopping and taking lots of pictures, before our evening reservations for dinner and watching the sunset. Here's some pictures of Oia.

Love my beautiful sister!

Oia has many steps, especially if you are going to venture down to the water. You could always take a donkey. Donkey's walk through most of the streets, so beware of donkey poop.

Dinner at Kastro's

The highlight of the day was having dinner at Kastro's. Our hotel made reservations for us, and knew when was the perfect time to go so that we could enjoy the sunset in its entirety. I'm not sure if our hotel requested the table we had but it was the best table at the restaurant. I think it was table #2, and a review I had read on trip advisor suggested requesting this table.

This area of Oia becomes very very crowded as the sun starts to set, but our seat was perfect, no one could stand anywhere around, or in front of where we were sitting. As we were sitting there multiple people came up to the restaurant and tried to get a seat, we just laughed, this is the most popular restaurant in Oia during the sunset, you need a reservation!

Our Dinner

1. Olives stuffed with cream cheese, dipped in beer dough and fried and flavored with oil balsamic dressing.

2. Traditional Tzatziki

3. Chicken Suvlaki with fries, grilled tomato and yogurt sauce.

4. Chicken fillet on the grill marinated in olive oil, lemon, oregano served with grilled vegetables and mustard sauce.

5. Chocolate Souffle with ice cream, nuts and chocolate syrup.

6. Baclava

Sunset

The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. Although they don't do justice to what it was like to be sitting there eating yummy food, drinking some wine and watching the sun drop over the horizon.

After dinner we walked back to the bus stop and rode back to Fira. Oia was a wonderful town to visit and walk around, but I was thankful that we chose to stay in Fira, especially when we got back to our hotel room and relaxed on our private balcony.
