Day Twenty Three: Tuscany

Image
Today we took the train from Verona to Florence, found our way by bus to the airport and then picked up our car. Once we got the car we headed for the small town of Greve in Chainti. "Greve in Chianti (the old name was Greve; in 1972 was renamed Greve in Chianti after the inclusion of that area in the Chianti wine district) is a town in the province of Florence, Tuscany, Italy. It is located about 31 kilometres (19 mi) south of Florence on A1 highway, and 42 kilometres (26 mi) north of Siena" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greve_in_Chianti ) . We stayed at an Agriturismo. An Agriturismo is "a combination of the words for "agriculture" and "tourism" in Italian - is a style of vacationing in farm house resorts. Small scale farming in Italy became less profitable, these agritourismi allowed the small farmer to augment the income from the farm, and for vacationers to sample the bounty of a rural life in Italy" ( http://goitaly.about.com/od/it...

2014: Have a friend visiting and didn't finish this one but you can look through the pictures....sorry, finish it later! :) _________________________________________________________________________________ Not sure I even want to write about this, because it's such a bad memory, but I think it is good to share to help people who are traveling to Europe, especially with limited mobility who might need a little help. Jen had our large suitcase and some carry-ons and I was pushing the folded up wheel chair, cane in hand and probably another carry on around my arm. We got to this point in the train station where the track was above us and we had to climb several stairs. As we were walking to this part a man started following along side me. When we got to the stairs he offered to help Jen with our large bag up the stairs, thinking that he was a nice guy and saw our need, we let him he...

Day Twenty One: The magical city of Venice

Getting to Venice was a little tricky. That morning we walked from our hotel to the center of the little town we were staying in, not a huge walk, but for me, and dragging the wheel chair and a suitcase, and our two carry ons, it was little tough. When we got to the town we were supposed to look for a tobacco shop. That's where they sell bus tickets. We found it, and the little old man running it, unfortunately the man only spoke italian, and he only took cash. We hadn't run in to too many places that only took cash and we hadn't got any since we only just got there the night before. Lesson learned. Jen walked all over the little town looking for an ATM and finally back to the hotel we stayed at to ask where to get cash. The only place that had an ATM was the airport, so Jen walked to the airport and back to me waiting at the tobacco shop. Finally we got our tickets and were on our way to the Island of Venice. Venice is an island but there is a land bridge that goes...
